Before you start reading, I'm going to break this page down for you. The rant is the text in this frame, in the other frame is a slide show, which should be viewed when indicated - otherwise it'll ruin what I'm saying. It's advisable to view it in full screen, depending on whether you can figure out how to do so (I certainly could!). If the bottom frame doesn't work for you, change your browser and get a grip on life. Just because people say FireFox is better doesn't make it so.
Update: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/09/30/ubrothel.xml&sSheet=/portal/2005/09/30/ixportaltop.html -"'Sex slaves' rescued in massage parlour raid". Now I can only speculate, but I'm convinced it's a direct response to this article, when you consider that I wrote it on the 19th, and linked it on the 22nd - it's too convenient to be a coincidence! Chew on those results Bob Geldof!!!
I was watching 'Real Life: Sex Traffic' the other day (or at least, it was called something like that) and I was pretty appalled at the stories the girls victimised were telling. It really moved me and I couldn't believe that nothing seems to be done about it, nor does it seem to be a widely publicised problem.
For some reason that I cant particularly justify, it made me pretty angry at Bob Geldof. He's a guy who acts like he cares so much, yet not once have I heard him mention anything as affecting as some of the stories that were being told. Maybe because he cant think of a way to sell you this plight like a product, maybe he cant think of a gimmick or catchphrase to outline just what is going on. And what is going on is pretty goddamned horrific.
Take this one girls story for example,
Her family lived near Chernobyl when the nuclear disaster happened and most of them now suffer from several medical maladies. Her younger brother/son had cancer and it was pretty serious. Some pisshand doctors had operated on him and botched it, and they needed thousands of pounds to get him sorted. You can't put a price tag on a life though surely? There clearly wasn't any work going around where she lived, but somehow she managed to get a job as a waitress on a piss poor wage. Some hustler bitch managed to convince her that she had a job waiting for her abroad, and when you're that poor, you probably want to believe people - what could be worse than the life you already have?
She was transported to some hotel, then beat and raped by a group of Turkish men, she was then whored out with all the proceeds going to some thug pimp. Months later the police raided the hotel she was being forced to work out of and sent her home. Things were much the same as when she left. They were still desperately poor, they were still starving, and her brother was still grievously ill. Feeling like she couldn't support her family any other way, she actually left to be a prostitute, because it was the only way she could get a reasonable amount of money. Within a month this time, the police caught her and sent her home, her brother had died, and they were still no better off.
I'm not going to voice my conclusions about why it took the police months to find her when she was being pimped, yet less than a month when she was working freelance - maybe it was just chance, maybe. Another one of the stories on the show also brought up something questionable - just as they were working on catching a pimp some cop blew a whistle, alerting him to the police presence. Another part of the show had a middle man to a pimp let slip that the pimp had a contact within the police.
But anyway, back to Bob Geldof. It seems, not only do I feel for people in real plight, but I can also think of a scheme for the masses to buy into.
(Now would be the time to look at the slideshow)
